Description

This spiral galaxy is located 35 million light years away in the constellation of Perseus at a declination of +41 degrees.  It is a magnitude 10.6 galaxy which spans 7 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 70,000 light years.

NGC 1003 is surprisingly close to the center of the Milky Way, unusual since our galaxy dust usually severely hampers our view of other galaxies.  As a result, many distracting bright stars are seen in the image.

Our view of this galaxy is about 10 degrees from edge-on.  Although our view perspective of the disk structure here is not great, it is still possible to see some disturbance in this galaxy.  The core sits slightly left of center.  Numerous blue star clusters are visible, especially on the right side of the disk.   The disk looks like it is developing the start of a grand design spiral arm structure.

A number of interesting distant galaxies are seen below and left of NGC 1003.
